At our monthly Steering Committee meeting yesterday, we had the pleasure of hearing from Brenda Robinson, Director of Nutrition Services at Bakersfield City School District (BCSD).  Brenda spoke to us about her experience of getting elementary and middle school children to learn about and enjoy healthy food. In particular, she stressed the importance of incorporating nutrition education into the classroom, so that a child already knows something about a new fruit or vegetable he or she is about to eat in the cafeteria. Brenda described the BCSD Wellness Policy document that all 44 elementary/middle schools that fall under the district are required to adhere to, as well as the federal and state regulations that determine what goes into school meals.
